Frequently asked questions
Is Rotta available in English?
No. Rotta is in Italian, like the exam it prepares you for: the Italian boating licence (patente nautica). The questions, lessons and audio are all in Italian.
Does Rotta work offline?
Yes. Questions, lessons, audio and images are inside the app, so no connection is needed after download. The only exception is the PDF of chart 5D, which opens in your browser from the Italian Portale dell’Automobilista.
Are these the real exam questions?
Yes. Rotta uses the official questions of Italian decree DD 131/2022, used in the exam since 2022: 1,472 for the core exam and 250 for sailing. Rotta is an independent app, not affiliated with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Which licence is Rotta for?
The Italian boating licence for up to 12 nautical miles from the coast (entro 12 miglia), motor and sail: quizzes, lessons, mock exams and chart work on chart 5D.
What is the mock exam like?
Like the real one: 20 questions with at most 4 mistakes, plus 5 sailing questions with at most 1 mistake if you take the sailing part, against the clock. You can pause it and carry on later.
What do I need for the chart work?
Nautical chart 5D printed in A3. The Carteggio section links to the official PDF on the Portale dell’Automobilista, ready to download and print.
Where is my progress saved? Can I move it to a new phone?
Only on your phone: Rotta has no account and no sync. Your device backup (iCloud or Google) may include it; without a backup, Rotta starts from scratch on a new phone.
How do I reset all my progress?
Uninstall Rotta and install it again: all of the app’s data is deleted from your phone.
The text is too small. Can I make it bigger?
Yes. Rotta follows the text size set on your phone: increase it in the accessibility settings and the app adapts.

Which devices does Rotta run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, and phones with Android 7.0 or later.
Is Rotta free?
Rotta is free to download. The full app is unlocked with a single in-app purchase, with no subscription.
