Frequently asked questions
Does Posita work without a network?
Yes. GPS needs no network or SIM: coordinates, accuracy, course, speed and emergency numbers all work offline. Only the weather needs a connection.
Do I need my iPhone nearby?
No. The Apple Watch app works on its own, even with your iPhone far away or switched off.
Which devices do I need?
An Apple Watch with watchOS 11 or later and, for the phone app, an iPhone with iOS 18 or later.
How accurate is the position?
Posita shows the estimated accuracy in metres and how long ago the position was read, so you know how far to trust it. Under open sky it is usually a few metres; between tall buildings, in narrow gorges or below deck it is worse.
Which coordinate formats are there?
Degrees and decimal minutes, as read out on VHF, degrees, minutes and seconds, or decimal degrees. Choose the format in the settings.
Does Posita call for help or send my position?
No. Posita shows the coordinates to read out on the phone or the radio, and the emergency number of the country you are in: tap it and a normal call opens. It does not replace a VHF radio, an EPIRB or a call to the emergency services.
Does Posita know the emergency number abroad?
Yes. On Apple Watch the emergency screen shows the right numbers for where you are, even offline: Posita works out the country, or at sea the nearest coast within 200 km, and takes the numbers from a verified directory stored in the app. In Switzerland you get 112 and Rega 1414; off Italy, VHF channel 16 first and then 1530 for the Coast Guard. On iPhone you choose the country.
Which countries does it cover?
231 countries and territories, with 921 emergency numbers, each checked against its official source (October 2026). At sea VHF channel 16 is always listed first. More than 200 km from any coast, Posita does not guess a country and points you to VHF 16 and 112.
Why does Posita ask for location and motion access?
Location shows your coordinates; motion powers the barometric altitude and pauses GPS while you are not moving, to save battery. Posita asks for location only while you use the app.
How much battery does it use?
Posita adapts GPS to what you are doing: full accuracy with the screen on and on the emergency screen, lighter with your wrist down or while you are still. For a long outing, start a trip from the watch face and end it when you are done.
What is the trip log?
A technical log on Apple Watch that helps improve battery use. It contains no coordinates and you can erase it whenever you like.
Is Posita free?
Posita is free to download. Your position and the emergency screen are always free.
Which languages does Posita speak?
English, Italian, German and French. Posita follows your device language.
